7-11 NOVEMBER 2022 - €950 (£795,00 APROX)
VENICE AND HER ISLANDS
The romantic city of Venice is located in the Veneto region of Italy — one of the northernmost states. This ancient and historically important city was originally built on 100 small islands in the Adriatic Sea. Instead or roads, Venice relies on a series of waterways and canals.
One of the most famous areas of the city is the world-renowned Grand Canal thoroughfare, which was a major centre of the Renaissance. Another unmistakable area is the central square in Venice, called the Piazza San Marco. This is where you’ll find a range of Byzantine mosaics, the Campanile bell and, of course, the stunning St. Mark’s Basilica.
Few cities can claim such a priceless art and history heritage as Venice. This unique city with its magical, spectacular scenery is not just beautiful; it is a real miracle of creative genius: a city built on mud, sand and the slime of a difficult, inhospitable landscape.
The biggest attraction in the gorgeous city of Venice is the architecture — which is enhanced by the ancient canals that surround it. As well as Piazza San Marco and St. Mark’s Basilica, the city is home to the Gothic masterpiece Doge’s Palace. This pink and white marble buildings has to be seen in the flesh to be fully appreciated.
There are many places in Venice which characterise the city’s illustrious history and association with the arts and architecture. Take the Bridge of Sighs, for example, which is a white limestone masterpiece that the interrogation rooms of Doge’s Palace to the prison.
But the most beautiful bridge in all of Venice has to be the Rialto Bridge. This ornate structure hangs over the Grand Canal with masterful confidence. Connecting San Polo to the sestieri of San Marco, the bridge has been rebuilt many times over the years.
Burano is amongst the main islands of the Venetian lagoon. At the moment about 3000 people live there and it is part of the municipality of Venice. It is linked to the smaller island of Mazzorbo by a small bridge. Just like Venice, it is divided into “Sestieri” (districts): San Martino Sinistro, San Martino Destro, San Mauro, Terranova and Giudecca (not to be confused with the homonymous island).
The isle of Burano is famous for the lace working art, (a tradition since the XVI century), its bright multicoloured houses and for the culinary traditions.
The Island, as many zones of the Venetian Lagoon, was founded by some inhabitants of the Roman city of Altino during the Barbarian invasions. The name Burano comes from the word Boreana, a district or a door in the city of Altino.
The colours of the houses are a peculiarity that makes the island unique. The origin of the colours is unknown, they could be possibly related to a family name or, more likely, to help fishermen to find out the island during the foggy days (not a rarity at all for Burano).
If you'd like to take home with you a small part of tradition you can buy a packet of “Bussolai” , a typical Biscuit made in Burano, yellow, made of eggs, flour, butter, sugar a sort of doughnut, (not to be confused with the Bussolai made in Chioggia, toasted bread with the shape of a ring).
Venice is a great opportunity for photographers as most of the time we will be on foot wandering through the endless canals, beautiful bridges savouring fabulous architecture as far as the eye can see. In my opinion this is absolutely the best way to explore this magnificent historical gem that Italy has to offer!

A LITTLE ABOUT ME:
I was born in Arusha, Tanzania in Africa below the slopes of Mount Meru and her majestic neighbour Kilimanjaro. During the 70's my parents left Tanzania for greener pastures in South Africa, first to Durban and then eventually to Johannesburg.
I studied Fine Arts in Durban, South Africa, where I ventured into the world of photography, loving the hours in the darkroom developing predominately black and white photos. I started my career in advertising, progressing to interior design and eventually to photography full time.
In recent years I have gone back to live in Asiago, northern Italy near Venice and the Dolomites where my ancestors originated. I am lucky enough to live near the magnificent historical city of Venice and know the area well. I have a huge love for Europe and the diverse beauty she offers, and this continues to inspire me to use the magic of light and capture what my eye sees and share it with the rest of the world.
So why chose me for a photo tour of Venice; well simply because I'm a professional photographer who lives near Venice, am fully bilingual with 2 mother tongues, English and Italian and I know this beautiful city well which means I can guide you and show you the very best that this magical place has to offer.
